This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Belt and Road Initiative. To actively expand cooperation and exchanges in higher education with countries along the Belt and Road and among the ASEAN countries, the delegation led by the Secretary of CPC Committee of Central South University (CSU), Yi Hong, visited Indonesia from December 12 to 16. The delegation visited various Indonesian institutions, including the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, the Ministry of Health Republic of Indonesia, the Bandung Institute of Technology, and the University of Indonesia. The delegation also attended the founding ceremony of the Southeast Asian Alumni Association and participated in an exchange meeting with KADIN Indonesia and representatives of Chinese enterprises in Indonesia. Accompanying the delegation was Xu Kaihua, an alumnus of the 1985 graduates and Chairman of GEM Co., Ltd.
At the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs of Indonesia, agreements were reached between the CSU, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime and Investment Affairs, and GEM regarding the training of Indonesian students in metallurgy and new materials, rail transportation, and international trade. Preliminary cooperation intentions were established for a collaborative student training model involving the university, government, and enterprises.
At the Bandung Institute of Technology, Yi Hong held discussions with the Minister of Health of the Republic of Indonesia, Budi Gunadi Sadikin, the President of Bandung Institute of Technology, Reini Wirahadikusumah, and Xu Kaihua. They signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Central South University, Bandung Institute of Technology, and GEM Co., Ltd. on the Establishment of a Collaborative Educational Institution. Discussions covered deepening cooperation in metallurgical disciplines, life sciences and medicine, and interdisciplinary medical engineering. The parties established common ground on enhancing cooperation in the joint research laboratory for China-Indonesia new energy materials and metallurgical engineering technology and signing a cooperation agreement. The delegation also reached a consensus with the Ministry of Health on signing the cooperation MOU and the visit of the Minister of Health to CSU.
During the visit to the University of Indonesia, both parties, building upon a previously signed MOU, exchanged views on advancing faculty and student exchanges and comprehensive collaboration based on national-level scientific and innovative platforms.
Throughout the visit, Yi Hong and the delegation attended the inaugural ceremony of the CSU's Southeast Asia Alumni Association. They presented the association with a plaque and flag and gifted an inscription from He Jishan, an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Yi Hong expressed that alumni are the university's most precious asset, and the university is immensely proud of those outstanding alumni from all walks of life. He thanked the alumni for their contributions to the university's development and encouraged them to step up efforts in supporting the alma mater's progress. Yi Hong highlighted the vital role of the alumni association, envisioning it as a platform for reciprocal support: the alumni contributing to the university's progress, the university aiding in the career advancement of alumni, and fostering a platform where alumni collectively support each other.
Subsequently, Yi Hong and the delegation took part in an exchange meeting with KADIN Indonesia and representatives of Chinese enterprises in Indonesia. The attendees included the Chairman of Kadin Indonesia Komite Tiongkok (KIKT), the Chairman of the China Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia, the President of Xinhua News Agency Indonesia Branch, the CEO of Huawei Branch Office in Indonesia, and the Chairman of BYD Malaysia and Indonesia Branch.
Moreover, the delegation was invited to visit the KIKT, engaging in substantive discussions on key talent requirements and training objectives for Chinese enterprises going global, and potential opportunities for university-enterprise collaboration. At the GEM’s Jakarta office, both parties exchanged views on implementing collaborative projects in Indonesia and advancing initiatives such as joint laboratory construction and the establishment of an international industry-university research center.
Representatives from the General Office of CSU, the Office of International Cooperation and Exchanges, the School of Metallurgy and Environment, the School of Traffic & Transportation Engineering, and other units accompanied the delegation on this fruitful visit.
